What is Social Security Disability?

Social Security Disability refers to programs run by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to provide monthly income to people with long-term disabilities. There are actually two different programs that disabled individuals could potentially receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits from. The right program will depend upon the individual applicant's family income and work history.

Because private disability insurance is expensive, most people do not have disability coverage through insurers. As a result, Social Security Disability may be the only source of disability benefits when injury or illness make working impossible. Unfortunately, actually qualifying for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration can be a challenge, so it is a good idea to talk with a Los Angeles disability lawyer for help.

How Do Social Security Disability Benefits Work?

When you become disabled, you can submit an application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits if you have a low household income and few financial resources. Alternatively, you can submit a claim for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) if you have worked long enough to become eligible for SSDI benefits.

If your application is approved, you may receive monthly income for as long as you remain disabled, up to your retirement date when you become eligible for Social Security retirement benefits.  If your application is denied, there are multiple stages of appeal so you can try and claim the benefits you need.

A Los Angeles disability lawyer can assist in determining what benefits you are eligible for and can help with the application process, so it is a good idea to contact an attorney as soon as you become disabled.
