Impairments That Qualify for Disability With Asthma

Impairments That Qualify for Disability With Asthma

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath.

For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.

Asthma signs and symptoms flare up in certain situations:

  • - Exercise-induced asthma, which may be worse when the air is cold and dry
  • - Occupational asthma, triggered by workplace irritants such as chemical fumes, gases or dust
  • - Allergy-induced asthma, triggered by airborne substances, such as pollen, mold spores, cockroach waste, or particles of skin and dried saliva shed by pets (pet dander)
Severe Asthma attacks can be life threatening. Therefore, the SSA has a complete section for patients with extreme difficulty breathing due to Asthma and other reasons in order to qualify for SSDI.

Qualifying for SSDI Benefits With Asthma Treatment Proofs

When you apply for disability benefits, you must demonstrate that you have been clinically diagnosed with Asthma, and your Asthma is severe enough to prevent you from engaging in gainful activity

You must maintain ongoing medical and clinical records that include a description of treatment and your response to that treatment over time. These records must document the severity of your condition and provide information on how you function while receiving treatment.
To assess asthma associated with chronic asthmatic bronchitis, the criteria for obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic pulmonary insufficiency are utilized (Section 3.02A of the Blue Book).

Asthma attacks are only eligible for disability benefits if they are protracted (lasting at least a day at a time) and severe enough to necessitate "intensive" treatment, which the SSA defines as:

- Emergency room treatment with documented proof,
- Intravenous bronchodilator,
- Antibiotic treatment, or
- Extended inhalational bronchodilator therapy
Furthermore, attacks must have occurred despite recommended medication, at least once every two months or at least six times a year, and necessitate the attention of a physician.

The SSA considers in-patient hospitalization lasting more than 24 hours to be two distinct attacks. When assessing the frequency of your asthma attacks, the SSA demands treatment data for at least 12 months.

If you are disabled because of Asthma that is severe enough to prevent you from working, you can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income(SSI) benefits.

Working closely with medical professionals and a qualified Social Security Disability attorney or advocate to collect and present the necessary documentation to support your disability claim in front of the Disability Determination Services (DDS) can help to ensure that your Asthma disability claim has the best chance of success.

Filing for Social Security Disability Due to Asthma

Section 3.03 of the Social Security Administration (SSA) Blue Book describes asthma. Section 3.00 deals with respiratory problems. The SSA bases its assessment of the severity of your condition, as it does for all conditions, on your ability to perform daily tasks, the limitations imposed by your symptoms (including pain), and the extent to which any ongoing treatment affects you.
